October 12, 2009 GREENVILLE, N.C. - SMU got the job done on Saturday night in Gerald Ford Stadium and the Pirates are still searching for some answers offensively to solve the puzzle.East Carolina head coach Skip Holtz says it came down to a few plays among many that really turned the tide of the contect. This week Rice rolls into Greenville to take on the Pirates for Homecoming. Several Pirate greats are expected to be in town this week to catch the game. The flu bug continues to work its way through the team quarterback Patrick Pinkney, running backs Dominque Lindsay and Brandon Jackson, linebacker Chris Mattocks, safety Levin Neal and others suffered it's effects on Saturday. Holtz said five players were taken not allowed to fly and another five players got sick in Dallas. Holtz had good things to say about the performance defensively of Nick Johnson, Van Eskridge, Matt Thompson who stepped in and played 51 snaps on Saturday and Jeremy Chambliss and insists that they are improving defensively if they can eliminate the big plays, the improvement will begin to show. On offense Dominque Lindsay and Dwayne Harris were singled out for having what Holtz termed as "all-star" performances along with tight end Kevin Gidrey and offensive linemen Sean Allen and Terrance Campbell. Skip says to expect lively competition at wide receiver where more of a threat is needed and in the secondary this week as the staff looks for ways to reward productivity. Holtz promisses there could be some changes in the depth chart as the week goes on. Holtz outlines the key points of last week and gets you set for Rice Week. Injuries include: Jonathan Williams who suffered a knee injury and is scheduled for an MRI on Monday, Antonio Allision is out for this week at defensive line while Michael Bowman remains doubtful and running back J.R. Rogers is listed at questionable. Lienbacker Chris Mattocks is listed as probable. Kicker Ben Hartman has been suffering some weakness in his leg and that affected the height of his kicks so Holtz inserted sophomore Ben Ryan last week.
