September 22, 2012Chapel Hill, N.C. - Bryn Renner passed for 321 yards and two touchdowns as North Carolina pulled away in the second half for a 27-6 victory over East Carolina in Kenan Stadium on Saturday.
The Tar Heels and Pirates played a close game in the first half. It was a Renner to Gio Bernard 14-yard touchdown catch with 5:50 to go in the first quarter that gave UNC a 7-0 lead.
East Carolina managed to get two field goals from Warren Harvey to pull to within four at halftime, 10-6. Those would be ECU's only points of the day.
Sean Tapley's 62-yard touchdown catch from Renner in the first four minutes of the second half set the stage as UNC went up 17-6.
Bernard scored again on a four yard run later in the third quarter to give North Carolina a commanding 24-6 cushion before a Casey Barth field goal iced the game for good.
Bernard caught six passed out of the backfield for the Tar Heels.
Shane Carden hit on 17 of his 30 passed for only 124 yards. Carden spend much of the day on his back due to the pressure of the UNC front four defensively,
North Carolina put up 450 yards of total offense while limiting ECU to just 233. Giovanni Ruffin had 59 yards on 18 rushes in his return from an injury for UNC.
Junior college transfer Vintavious Cooper led the Pirates with 68 yards on the ground. Eric Highsmith led the Tar Heels with eight catches, many at key times of the game, for 66 yards.
With the loss to the Tar Heels, East Carolina falls to 2-2 while North Carolina improves their overall record to 2-2 with the victory.
