Panthers Top ECU 89-82

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Virginia Tech transfer Manny Atkins was unstoppable scoring 27 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. N.C. State and Kentucky transfer Ryan Harrow had 24 and the coach's son, R.J. Hunter, scored 22 as Georgia State had little trouble getting past East Carolina 89-82 in Minges Coliseum Sunday afternoon.
Atkins had 11 points by halftime as Georgia State took a 35-27 cushion into intermission in a game where the Panthers led nearly the entire game. All but a two-point lead that ECU enjoyed at the 14:35 mark of the second half when Caleb White sunk two free throws to give the Pirates their only lead of the game.
Georgia State then went on a 23-9 run to put the Pirates away. ECU cut the lead to five on two occasions with just over eight minutes to play but the hot shooting Panthers hit from inside and out as well as canning 15 of 21 from the foul line to secure the victory.
ECU(10-4) hit only 1 of 11 from the arc in the first half and only 8 of 31 overall to go along with a tough shooting night from the charity stripe where the Pirates hit just 22 of 34.
The Pirates got 20 points from their bench and were led in scoring by Akeem Richmond who scored 18 of his 21 points in the second half, going 7 of 18 from the arc after starting out just 1 of 5.
USC transfer Curtis Washington had his way in the paint making several dunks and pulling down eight boards for Georgia State(7-6).
It was the first time the Pirates have lost two games in a row since late January when the Pirates lost consecutive games to UTEP and Memphis.
Prince Williams scored 18, Michael Zangari had 16, Caleb White tossed in 13 and Paris Roberts-Campbell came on late to score 10 for the Pirates.
Georgia State his 51 percent from the floor including 6-18 from the arc and the Panthers connected for 71 percent from the free throw line while ECU shot at a 45 percent clip but only 25 percent from three-point range. Georgia State scored 52 points in the paint.
