Wild Wednesday

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina continued preparation for Saturday's first spring scrimmage with a two-hour practice at Hight Field on Wednesday.

With temperatures rebounding into the high 70's, there was just enough heat to notice, but windy enough to help matters along.

The Pirates came out in shells for Wednesday's workout, going through individual and team drills early at a very brisk pace before breaking up and moving into some offense vs defense in the latter part of the workout.

With the battle at quarterback heating up, Saturday's scrimmage is the next important step in landing the job. Rio Johnson, Shane Carden, Brad Wornick and Cody Keith all looked solid on this day although Wornick threw a couple of picks, one of which Jake Geary took back for a score. We will know more when live bullets are flying on Saturday.

The three combined on 16-of-24 passing for 107 yards. Keith, who was 6-of-8 for a unit-best 51 yards, connected with Andrew Bodenheimer for a 19-yard completion.

The team continues to run around with a great deal of zip and appears to be very attentive to detail. With only eight practices remaining before the annual spring game on April 14, the Pirate staff is trying to get everything they can from every minute on the field.

"I thought it went well, said ECU head coach Ruffin McNeill, "I thought the defense ran around well and the offense made plays too. The defense is really adding to the package so that was nice to see too. Today was a day to divide reps at quarterback, Lincoln has a plan and I like how they're competing. You either do one of two things. You get better or get worse and we asked everyone individually to get better today."

Coach McNeill says that Saturday's first scrimmage will be limited because he wants some additional time to work on fundamentals and skeleton drills.

The third year Pirate coach talked about the progress of this team after the Wednesday workout. PI-TV also caught up with defensive end Lee Pegues and wide receiver Dayon Arrington for an offensive and defensive recap.
