Week Four Begins

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Day thirteen is in the books for East Carolina as week four of the 2012 spring camp rolled into its final week.

The team practiced in shells on Monday but you couldn't tell it at times by the fierce contact in some drills and even in the scrimmage portion at the end of practice in preparation for Saturday's annual Purple-Gold spring game.

"I want to have planned situations, I want to see the game flow on both sides of the football. We've done that every day of "team". We've really had some comepetitive practices. I want to have the fans involved there with the officials. Not quite an actual game day but it will be similar." said McNeill who indicated the quarterback competition will likely continue into the fall.

Lots of fundamental work continued to be the rule as Ruffin McNeill only has this week to get better as a team before he turns them over to strength coach Jeff Connors for the summer.

"It was a normal practice for us. We had individual. We have a great installation period with special teams. Skelly, I like how we worked today. It will be helmets and jerseys only on Wednesday as we get ready for the scrimmage on Saturday."

Connors talked about the progress made during the winter and spring thusfar and we catch the latest from Coach McNeill and his recap of Monday along with quarterback Cody Keith and his offensive update.

NOTES from ECU Athletics Media Relations: Pirate quarterbacks combined on a 16-of-27, 93-yard passing effort during the team phase of Monday's practice. Junior Rio Johnson (8-of-16, 72 yards) had the longest play of the segment, connecting with sophomore IWR Justin Hardy on a 32-yarder with his second throw of the drill. Redshirt freshman Cody Keith completed his first three and last four passes to finish with a seven-of-nine performance (21 yards). Junior running back Torrance Hunt recorded the longest rush of the day with a 16-yarder on his first carry. ECU's defense continued its pressure with five tackles for lost yardage and sacks by junior DE Justin Dixon, senior DT Michael Brooks and junior OLB Derrell Johnson. Redshirt freshman IWR Donte Sumpter (right knee) and junior RB Michael Dobson (right shoulder) returned to work Monday, but junior FS Damon Magazu continues to nurse a lower back injury and will be sidelined during the Purple-Gold Game.
