Spring Camp Concludes

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina completed their four-week spring football camp on Wednesday with a two-hour workout in anticipation of Saturday's annual Purple-Gold spring game in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium scheduled for 2:30pm.

For third year ECU head coach Ruffin McNeill, it was another day at the office but one to squeeze in as much as possible in what was the last full practice of the spring cycle.

The team worked hard again on Wednesday and showed little signs of fatigue in what has been one of the cooler spring camps temperature wise in recent history. McNeill was pleased with where this team has progressed over the past four weeks and talked about it for PI-TV after practice.

"Today was a mandatory NCAA helmet and jersey day so we had a rehersal of what we'll do on Saturday," said McNeill, "It was a time for us to scout one another just rehearsing what what we want to do on Saturday. Special teams was an organizational two group periods. I like the way that went too."

The former Pirate safety knows what it takes as a team to win at this level.

"I like this entire spring how far we've come, the enthusiasm, you hear it today, the energy has been fantastic. We just want to play good, smart fundamental football. If someone does make a mistake and they will make some mistakes, we've done a good job of correcting one another and correcting themselves so we have done a good job so far."

McNeill also outlines what we can expect at the spring game on Saturday.

"We're planning on getting in approximately eighty plays. Sixty with the number one offense going against the number 2 defense and vice-versa, and about 20 plays for the threes to compete against each other," McNeill said. "There'll be some positions that may blend due to depth and competition battles, such as the quarterbacks, running backs, defensive line and secondary."

Coach McNeill gives his complete recap of spring camp including our traditional "grade the camp" segment, an injury report, his forecast of the quarterback position. Catch PI first photos, camp video and more.

NOTES From ECU Media Relations:
Wednesday's gathering represented the last official position coach-supervised team practice until the Pirates conduct their first workout of fall camp Friday, Aug. 3. Other than the handful of players who have sat out the entire or portion (QB Shane Carden/right index finger, FS Damon Magazu/lower back and NT Leroy Vick/concussion) of the spring season with injuries, McNeill expects a full roster to be available Saturday. Only senior ILB Daniel Drake (lower back) is listed as questionable heading into the contest. Redshirt freshman QB Cody Keith tossed 25-yard touchdown passes to senior RB Reggie Bullock and sophomore IWR Justin Hardy during the team segment. Junior QB Rio Johnson also contributed a scoring toss, finding junior OWR Reese Wiggins with a 30-yarder.
