Senior Night Win
GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina took home a solid 69-68 overtime Senior Night victory over Marshall Wednesday evening in Minges Coliseum behind 27 points and 8 rebounds from lone senior Darrius Morrow.
Marshall shot out ahead early by a score of 17-9 on a Dennis Tinnon bucket with just under 13 minutes in the first half.
Two Paris Roberts-Campbell buckets and four scores from Maurice Kemp found ECU back to within four. A Darrius Morrow jumper and two free throws got ECU back to within two going into halftime at 34-32.
Marshall opened up a five point lead early in the second half on a Dago Pena jumper at the 16:38 mark. Morrow scored three times in the next three minutes to tie the game at 44 apiece.
A Roberts-Campbell lay-in gave ECU their first lead of second half 46-44 with just over 12 minutes to go.
DeAndre Kane's three-pointer and a Dennis Tinnon basket put Marshall up by three at 55-52. A Damier Pitts trey found the Herd up by four at 58-54.
With the Pirates down by five points with 5:08 left in the game a Miguel Paul trey closed the lead back to within two and a technical foul on DeAndre Kane going into the timeout put Paul back on the line where he connected on one of two to close to within one.
Roberts-Campbell connected on a three-pointer with 3:15 left to give ECU a two point lead. Morrow followed that with a lay-in at the 1:52 mark. But a Shaquille Johnson bucket tied the game at 63 and Paul missed on his game winning shot attempt as time expired in regulation.
ECU had no shot attempts in overtime as Paul and Morrow went to work from the charity stripe. ECU opened up a four point lead at 69-65 with 13.3 left in overtime. A Kane trey pulled Marshall back to within one with 1.9 seconds in overtime. Paul was fouled on the inbounds pass with .4 seconds to play and missed the first shot. Paul seemed to purposely miss the second free throw giving Marshall too little time to get off a shot at the end.
Maurice Kemp scored 10 for ECU(13-15,4-11) and both Robert Sampson and Paris Roberts-Campbell tossed in 9 points each for ECU.
Damier Pitts and DeAndre Kane led Marshall(17-12,8-7) with 17 points apiece while Shaquille Johnson chipped in with 10 for the Herd.
Marshall won the rebounding battle by 15 and scored on 20 second chance opportunities but ECU capitalized with 24 points off of 20 Herd turnovers in the win. Both teams hit 46 percent of their shot attempts from the floor.
