ECU Topples Wolfpack 42-28
Shane Carden passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more. East Carolina picks up their ninth win of the season and sixth victory out of their last seven road games with a 42-28 win over N.C. State. RALEIGH, N.C. - Justin Hardy surpassed the all time ECU receiving yards record for a season(1,130 yards in 2013) with an 11-yard catch in the third quarter, passing Dwyane Harris (1,123 yards in 2010) and Vintavious Cooper ran for 148 yards as East Carolina blew past North Carolina Stste 42-28 in Carter-Finley Stadium Saturday afternoon.
It was the Wolfpack's seventh straight loss. ECU has won 18 of 20 games during the Ruffin era when outrushing its opponent. Cooper's rushing day in Raleigh leaves him just 98 yards away from consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons.
ECU Quarterback Shane Carden passed for 255 yards and three touchdowns in the win and ran for two more. The Pirates now gear up for Marshall next Friday for the Conference USA East Division title in Huntington.
East Carolina(9-2/6-1) passed for 275 yards and ran for 170 as the Pirates scored first on a Justin Hardy three-yard touchdown to open the scoring. It was Hardy's 25th of his
Late in the first quarter Tony Creecy got State on the scoreboard on a four yard pass from Brandon Mitchell to tie the game at 7-7.
Then the Pirates, who played turnover free football reeled off 28 unanswered points beginning with a Carden to Bryce Williams 5-yard touchdown pass (his fifth of the year) to extend the lead to 14-7 four minutes into the second period.
A pair of Shane Carden touchdown runs, one late in the first half and another at the 8:53 mark of the third quarter propelled ECU to a 28-7 margin before Breon Allen got in the act with a three-yard touchdown scamper to make it 35-7 at the 5:02 mark in the third stanza.
Carden found Lance Ray who made a one handed, circus catch for a 25 yard touchdown for the Pirates' last score of the game.
But the Wolfpack got the better of it in the fourth quarter, recovering a pair of onside kicks.
Jumichael Ramos scored on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Mitchell. Rashard Smith caught a State touchdown of 30 yards and Mitchell found Ramos again in the last five seconds of the game on an 18 yard strike from Mitchell.
N.C. State(3-7/0-7) had 441 of total offense to ECU's 445 as Mitchell passed for 312 yards and four touchdowns on the day in a losing cause.
