FAU Outlasts ECU 78-67
BOCA RATON, FLA. - It was Jackson Trapp in the first half and Marquan Botley going off in the second half as FAU(6-11) wore down a thin East Carolina lineup on the road at FAU Arena 78-67 Thursday night.
Trapp tossed in 22 and Botley had 17 to lead four Owls in double-figures, including Justin Huffington's 16 points and 13 boards along with 12 from Pablo Bertone.
Akeem Richmond scored 20, Michael Zangari had 14 and 10 rebounds and Caleb White chipped in with 12 for East Carolina(11-6).
"It was more of the same for us, we were right there in the second half. The first 30 minutes we're fine and then fatigue sets in. They hit some bombs in the second half. Giving up 48 points in the second half and not being physical enough, said ECU coach Jeff Lebo, "We couldn't stop them in the second half so it's more of the same for us."
The Pirates were clicking early offensively, jumping out to an efficient 16-5 lead with 13 minutes in the first period.
After two quick FAU fouls on the league's second leading scorer, Pablo Bertone, Jackson Trapp went to work with five treys for 15 points in the first half as the Owls clawed their way back into the contest. Trapp's fifth three-pointer pulled the FAU to within four points at 26-22.
Justin Raffington scored for FAU and Bertone finally added a little scoring punch with a pair of baskets, including a three-point play that cut the ECU lead to one with 1:30 to go in the first half.
Marquan Botley's free throw tied the game for FAU with 30 seconds left in the first half. Then Akeem Richmond, who had three treys in the first half, canned a three-pointer as time was running out that gave the Pirates a three point 33-30 lead at intermission.
Richmond and Trapp exchanged three-pointers in the first five minutes of a closely contested second half. Bertone drove in for a bucket to give FAU the lead by one. Johnson extended FAU's lead to four at the 15 minute mark.
But the Pirates kept it close on Richmond's sixth trey of the game to trim the Owl lead to 48-47. Brandon Stith follow jam reclaimed the lead for ECU at 51-50 with eleven minutes to play.
Pablo Bertone picked up his fourth foul for FAU midway through the second half and Mike Zangari collected his fourth personal for the Pirates.
Point guard Marquan Botley's three-point jumper gave the Owls a seven-point lead. Johnson's rebound and basket off of his own missed shot pushed the FAU lead to eight with 5:35 to go.
Botley's third trey pushed the Owls lead to nine. He canned a pair of free throws for a 70-59 lead before nailing his fourth trey and a 73-61 margin late in the contest.
Petar Torlak's trey in the last two minutes and an Antonio Robinson bucket cut the lead to 78-67, the final margin of victory for the Owls.
ECU had five assists against 12 turnovers for the game while FAU had 12 assists and 6 turnovers.
