IRVING, Texas - After establishing a school single-game record by passing for 439 yards and accounting for six touchdowns in a 65-59 Conference USA double-overtime victory over Marshall, East Carolina sophomore quarterback Shane Carden earned his third Conference USA Offensive Player-of-the-Week honor of the season according to an announcement Monday by league officials.
Carden, who was also cited by C-USA for his play against Memphis (Oct. 13) and Houston (Nov. 3), connected on 38-of-47 passes for a completion percentage of 80.6, the third-highest single-game clip in ECU history. He tossed three TDs, including a six-yarder to Danny Webster with 0:04 remaining to force overtime and a 25-yarder to Andrew Bodenheimer in the first extra period.
Trailing 52-45 with only 1:51 remaining in the fourth quarter, Carden engineered a game-tying drive that moved East Carolina 76 yards in 11 plays with only one time out. He completed 8-of-10 passes for 65 yards and converted a 4th-and-10 play from the Pirate 24-yard line during the possession.
Carden also rushed for a career-high three touchdowns, including the game-winner from one yard out in the second overtime stanza to successfully close out the highest scoring game in C-USA history. He helped extend East Carolina's consecutive red zone scoring streak to 31 visits with a 7-of-7 performance (18-of-18 in last three games), that was sparked by his 19-of-22, 261-yard, one TD first-half passing performance.
Joining Carden as Conference USA honorees this week are SMU senior linebacker Ja'Gared Davis as defensive player-of-the-week, and Rice junior kick returner Jeremy Eddington as the special teams' selection.
Carden and the Pirates (8-4, 7-1 C-USA) will await their bowl assignment after earning post-season eligibility for the sixth time in the last seven years.
