ECU Wins 5th Straight

ATLANTA - East Carolina recorded their fifth straight win to open the season with a 62-53 victory over Georgia State at GSU Sports Arena Monday night.
Maurice Kemp scored 16 and pulled down 11 rebounds while Robert Sampson also had a double-double with 12 points and 16 boards in the win. Shamarr Bowden chipped in with ten points for ECU. Miguel Paul had eight points.

Virginia Tech transfer Manny Atkins and Devonta White led Georgia State(3-3) with 15 and 13 points respectively.
The Pirates opened the road game fast with an early 8-0 lead.
Two Shamarr Bowden treys a three pointer from Miguel Paul and a basket by Maurice Kemp put ECU(5-0) up by twelve, 29-17, with three minutes to go in the first half.
Ty Armstrong's dunk off an assist from Bowden made it 31-17. T.J. Shipes scored right before halftime to cut the Pirate lead to 31-20 at halftime.
An R.J. Hunter bucket cut the lead to ten early in the second half.
A Manny Atkins three-point jumper and a Markus Crider basket cut the East Carolina lead to eight at 46-38. ECU went back up by 11 when Robert Sampson nailed a bomb from the top of the key.
When Miguel Paul went out with four fouls, Corvonn Gaines came in to run the show at the point. Bowden hit again to put ECU up by 12 with 6:12 to go.
ECU was solid in transition. Gaines found Marshall Guilmette with a no-look pass inside for a three point play.
Cameron Solomon's first bucket of the contest for Georgia State cut the ECU lead to 54-41 with 4:57 to go. Georgia State contiued to try to answer on the offensive end of the floor as Davonte White cut the Pirate lead to 56-45 with 4:11 remaining.
Two Kemp free throws preserved a 12 point lead with 2:08 in regulation.
Two Parris Roberts-Campbell free throws 61-48 with 35 seconds to play.
Hunter drained a trey cut the lead to nine with :25 seconds to go to close out the scoring.
East Carolina hit 37 percent of their shots for the evening in the victory.
