ECU scored two runs in the second inning and two more in the fourth and coasted to their fourth straight victory 7-2 on the road at Campbell Wednesday night.
Alec Burleson picked up his first victory of the year for ECU, going three innings on what proved to be largely a staff day as the Pirates gear up for a three game series this weekend against North Carolina.
Burleson is the first two-way starter (pitching/hitting) since Reid Love in 2015.
“I’m really proud of the guys and anytime you can get a win on the road is good. I thought Alec (Burleson) pitched well and Davis (Kirkpatrick) was tremendous," said Cliff Godwin, "We got a lot of good innings from our entire staff tonight and for the most part the pitching was good. Defensively, we played really well and had some quality at-bats up and down the whole lineup.”
Alan Winans took the loss and falls to 0-4 with the loss. Winans gave up two runs on four hits for Campbell who used six pitchers all told.
The Pirates got on the board first when Dusty Baker doubled to right to bring home a pair of ECU runs and make it 2-0. Later in the same inning Brady Lloyd’s single brought Baker home to add to the lead and make it 3-0.
Lloyd brought another run home in the fourth inning on a sac fly to left that allowed Dusty Baker to score. Then Bryant Packard reached on a fielding error in center field and Baker scampered home to make the score 4-0 Pirates.
ECU scored again in the seventh when Chandler Jenkins sac flied to center field which allowed Brady Lloyd to score and make it 7-0.
Campbell finally got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning when Mehl singled to cut the ECU lead to five.
The Pirates host UNC this Friday afternoon at 5 o’clock in Clark-LeClair Stadium.
