HOUSTON - Maurice Kemp scored a career high 33 points and pulled down 9 rebounds while Ty Armstrong tossed in 22 as East Carolina got an important Conference USA road win over Rice, 79-63, at Tudor Fieldhouse Saturday night.
East Carolina(13-8/4-4) hit 57 percent from the floor despite only connecting on 2 of 11 from the arc.
The Pirates did most of their damage in the paint taking a 29-26 lead into the locker room at halftime. Kemp and Armstrong had ten points apiece at intermission.
The Pirates hit 23 of 24 from the charity stripe in the contest including Kemp connecting on 10 for 13.
Rice(5-16/0-6) only hit 37 percent of their shots and just 5 of 21 from three-point range. The Owls got 19 points and 10 rebounds from Tamir Jackson and Austin Ramljak chipped in with 12.
